How This Calculator Works
The material estimates use standard construction practices and include waste factors:
- Decking: 10% waste factor on boards (cuts, defects, pattern matching). Joists sized per IRC span tables. Posts spaced per beam span requirements. Hardware counts include joist hangers, post brackets, and fasteners at 2 screws per board-joist intersection.
- Fencing: Posts set 8' on center (or 6' for high wind), sunk 1/3 of total post length + 6" below ground. Concrete figured at 2 bags (50 lb) per post for a 10" diameter hole. Picket counts include the selected gap spacing.
- Cost estimates use mid-range 2026 retail pricing and vary significantly by region and season. Lumber prices fluctuate. Get actual quotes from your local yard.
- Always buy 5-10% extra. These estimates are close but boards split, measurements shift, and one trip back to the store costs more in gas and time than a few extra boards.
